In the current issue of the Archaeology Magazine of the NHM Vienna, it is time to go high up in the Hallstatt high valley, to the Dammwiese. On it are settlement traces from the Late Iron Age, which have been studied since the late 19th century.
Even today, various archaeologists are working to gather more information from the Dammwiese. One of them is Gerald Raab, who, building on the old documentation and the results of the research trenches, contributes his small shovel to understanding the extent and significance of the Late Iron Age mining settlement.
I was allowed to accompany him and his faithful dog Leopold for a day with the microphone. Besides the scientific insights, Gerri also explains his methods, which not only allow him to look into the ground but also carry him far up into the air.
