Mick Underwood, the drummer of all "Gillan" albums between 1979 and 1982 -- passed away at the end of July this year. In this program, we want to honor him by playing excerpts from two performances by “Gillan” at the Reading Rock Festival from the years 1980 and 1981.
Mick Underwood had already played with Ian Gillan in the late sixties in the band “Episode Six”. Gillan and also Roger Glover had him also recommend Ritchie Blackmore -- whom he knew from his time with the “Outlaws”. Thus, Underwood played a significant role in the formation of the Mark II lineup of “Deep Purple”.
When Gillan transformed the jazz-rock formation “Ian Gillan Band” in 1978/79 into the rock band “Gillan”, Mick Underwood was the ideal drummer for the band.
RIP Mick Underwood!
