Construction Site Shelter Huts

With the Südwiener Hut and the Werfener Hut recently closing, two extremely popular and frequently visited huts in Salzburg have shut down.
What makes it so complex, complicated, and expensive to build and maintain huts in the alpine region?
Eva Schmidhuber discussed this with Ludwig Eichinger from the Alpine Club and Edi Jost from the Nature Friends in the Radiofabrik studio.

Edi reports from a construction site at the Happischhaus in the Tennengebirge after storm damage with water ingress.
Where everything needs to be done quickly, but summer is short, the paths are long and high, helicopter flights are expensive and not always possible -- whether due to weather, nature conservation, or hunting reasons.

Ludwig talks about the planned renovation at the Zeppezauerhaus on Untersberg, which became necessary after a visit from the work inspector.
Because even employees at alpine mountain huts have a right to separate staff toilets and shower facilities.

In addition, there are fire protection and nature conservation regulations, difficulties with landowners, rising energy and construction costs, water shortages, high guest numbers, increased expectations, difficult search for tenants...
The list is long and incomplete.

Edi and Ludwig also explain why they will not, following the example of a Pinzgau mountain hotelier, pressure the public with closures.
And why the Alpine Club and Nature Friends do not want to sell their huts profitably to financially potent private individuals.

The alpine associations have launched the “Emergency call from the Alps”, a petition for better public funding of huts and trails.
