Who decides what women eat? Between mammoth hunters, diet morals, care work, and barbecue tongs, the patriarchy sits at the table. FEMMEcast explores hunger, pleasure, taste, and the power to decide what goes on one's own plate.
Who is still sitting at the table? Women eat differently, yes, no? Is eating private? Nonsense. Hardly anything is as everyday and at the same time so thoroughly seasoned with gender roles, power, and expectations as what is on our plates. The hearty appetite belongs to the man, the discipline of the woman. Meat promises strength, salad female reason. She shops, plans, cooks, and knows what everyone else likes, while her own hunger is under observation.
Too much, too fatty, too sweet, too late, wrong. And woe to a woman who simply says: I am hungry. FEMMEcast sits at the dining table and looks more closely.
The plate is not an innocent piece of porcelain. On it land ideals of beauty and diet culture, care work and money, tradition and socially conditioned taste. The old mammoth hunter and the patient berry picker must finally disappear into the eternal hunting grounds. Women eat differently questions female decision-making power over one's own body. The patriarchy sits at the table with knife and fork; it's high time to take the plate away from it.
