Franziska Füchsl: On the Edge of the Effort

„On the southern slope of the European watershed at the southern edge of the Bohemian Highlands, a border junction, a petrified whirlpool, the three Müh rivers originate: de Gloane, de Stoanane, de Gręǫße, also Grǫıße. The hilly, recently sharply descending high plateau before the Danube, which guides them and from which they escape, is called Upper Mühlviertel. Yet, the 'l' that grants the Müh its water rights does not reach the mouth. The river is constantly tapped and diverted. We always encounter it in a figurative sense. Under our gaze and in our hands, it shatters the river into Müh-metonymy. We stand on the shore and jump: to defense and water level, to wheel and mill, flour, bread, and deception, to bones, devil, and certain death, to wood shavings, bucket, and confetti, to current, light, and e-waste, to fabric from which hymns are not made.
