The 22. September 2026 is globally dedicated to stem cell donation.
The World Marrow Donor Day reminds us of the many people who register as potential
stem cell donors, creating the opportunity to help a seriously ill person one day.

Stem cell donation is a topic that many people only become directly concerned with when a
serious illness changes their own life or that of a family member. That is why
information is so important. The possibility of a compatible stem cell donation can be an
important medical treatment option for people with severe diseases of the blood-forming system. These include, for example, certain types of leukemia
and other conditions where the function of the blood-forming system is severely impaired.
🧬 Why registering as a stem cell donor can be important
In a stem cell transplant, it is crucial to find a donor who is as compatible as possible. The search for a suitable match is not always easy. That is precisely why many registered potential
donors are important.

If you want to register as a potential stem cell donor, you should first inform yourself at the responsible official agencies about the current
requirements, the registration process, and the medical prerequisites.
The Austrian Stem Cell Registry provides information about the search
for matching stem cell donors and about registration options.

It is important to note: registering does not automatically mean you will donate stem cells at some point. It initially means that you are generally available as a potential donor and can be contacted if a suitable match is found. Whether a donation is actually possible depends on various medical and
organisational conditions.
🩸 Blood donation – saving lives
Besides stem cell donation, traditional blood donation also plays an important role
in healthcare. Blood is needed every day. According to the Austrian Red Cross,
about every 90 seconds a blood donation is required in Austria, based on the information published there.

Blood may be needed after serious accidents. It is also required during childbirth, surgeries,
and in the treatment of people with severe illnesses. Blood is an essential emergency medication and cannot be artificially produced. Therefore,
every single blood donation is significant.

It does not matter whether the blood type is common or rare:
Different blood types are needed for medical care. If you want to donate blood, you should
inform yourself about the current conditions, age limits, health prerequisites, and available
blood donation appointments at the responsible official agencies.

🩸 Blood donation:
Blood cannot be artificially produced. Therefore, people who can donate blood and meet the medical prerequisites are an important part of patient care.

❤️ When seconds count: quickly find defibrillators
Another topic of today’s program was medical emergencies. In a cardiac arrest, every second counts. A quick response, immediate emergency call, prompt resuscitation, and – if available – the use of a defibrillator (AED) can be vital components of emergency care.

In such situations, it can be helpful to already know where defibrillators are located in your environment. That is why we pointed out two resources in today’s program that can assist in finding AED locations.

The Defi Network Austria can provide information on defibrillator locations in Austria. Additionally, there is the Defi Map Switzerland, which makes AED locations in Switzerland accessible. Such resources can be especially helpful when you are on the move or in an unfamiliar environment.

It is therefore worthwhile not to wait until an emergency occurs. Knowing where an AED is located nearby gives you a crucial informational advantage in an emergency.
Of course, this does not replace professional medical emergency care.
🚑 In a medical emergency
In a medical emergency, the general rule is: immediately call the local emergency number and follow the instructions of the rescue dispatch center. The staff there can give important instructions and coordinate the next steps.

Depending on the situation, first aid measures, resuscitation, or the use of an available
AED can play an important role. The key is to get help as quickly as possible and follow the instructions of professional emergency personnel.

❤️🧬 Today was about help, prevention, and responsibility

The topics of stem cell donation, blood donation, and first aid may seem different at first glance. But they are united by a common idea: help can be prepared before it is urgently needed. Registering as a potential stem cell donor, donating blood, or knowing AED locations can be important contributions to medical care.
