Parties behind the Green Denmark Implementation Agreement have agreed to exempt additional crops, including selected fruits and berries, in 2027, as it is assessed that they would be heavily affected by the new nitrogen regulation. This was announced by the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare in a press release. Vegetable growers have already been exempted from the new regulation next year, and a closer examination of the regulation's impact on Danish crops means that more will be exempted in the coming year. The new crops, also exempted from the new nitrogen regulation in 2027, are: Melon Rhubarb Strawberries Table grapes Pumpkins Woody plants at plant nurseries "I am satisfied that we have the opportunity to also exempt some berry and fruit growers, who otherwise faced major challenges, so they get one more year to adapt. It is important that we ensure Danes can continue to include Danish fruits and vegetables in their shopping baskets, while also protecting our water environment," says Minister Christian Rabjerg Madsen (S). There are also relaxations underway for potato growers, after experts have examined the overall knowledge base regarding nitrogen leaching from the cultivation of potatoes and vegetables. It will now—with some exceptions—be adjusted downward, how much nitrogen potatoes leach into the water environment under the new nitrogen regulation. This will improve the prospects for potato production compared to initial expectations. The experts have found no basis to change the calculated leaching from vegetables, which will therefore remain unchanged in the regulation. The exemption applies to both conventional and organic production.
