Eco-September gave a significant boost in sales at ICA store

In Sweden, the annual campaign Eco-September has just concluded, where stores, food companies, and organic farmers once again organized activities to make organic foods more visible across the country. The activities were carried out in stores, on farms, on social media, and notably within the ICA chain, which this year has a special focus on organic products. According to a press release from Organic Sweden, the many campaign activities have once again had a positive effect on sales—especially within the ICA chain, which in the spring took an inspiration trip to Copenhagen to learn from the success of Danish grocery chains in selling organic products. One of the participants on the Copenhagen trip was grocer Ola Hollerup, who operates ICA Malmborgs Clemenstorget in Lund, and perhaps he learned something in Denmark. In the press release from Organic Sweden, he is highlighted for doubling the sales of selected organic and Krav-labeled products during the September campaign compared to the same period the previous year. However, the growth in the Lund store is primarily attributed to a series of breakfast events at ICA Malmborgs stores, where eight food companies collaborated to offer customers organic breakfast products and demonstrate how many organic alternatives are actually available in everyday categories. "Eco-September is proof that we can focus on organic and Krav-labeled products if we want to. It’s largely about giving organic products space and visibility and about informing people what the products stand for. You simply have to be clear," says Ola Hollerup. Certificates for the most active participants To highlight some of the actors who have made a special effort during the campaign, Organic Sweden has, among other things, awarded an Eco-September diploma to ICA Kvantum Södermalm, which actively worked with displays, tastings, and various in-store activities throughout September to focus on organic products. According to Charlotte Bladh André, CEO of Organic Sweden, it is encouraging to see how many have chosen to give organic products a little extra space during September. "This year’s award winners demonstrate in various ways how to create engagement around organic products. It can be about making products more visible and inspiring in the store, allowing consumers to meet farmers up close, or finding creative ways to tell the story of the food and the people behind it," says Charlotte Bladh André, who has fought hard in recent years to create new progress for the organic market in Sweden. There is no information on the overall effect of Eco-September 2026, organized by Organic Sweden, Krav, and Ekologiska Lantbrukarna.

The activities have been carried out both in stores, on farms, on social media, and not least in the ICA chain, which this year has a particular focus on organic products.
