This summer's biggest ecology event will provide answers to some of the hottest topics in agriculture right now.

Økologisk Nu

When the entire agricultural industry gathers for the Organic Market Day on Wednesday, June 3rd, from 9 am to 6 pm in Almind near Kolding, there will be new and useful knowledge to gain about regenerative agriculture and the green tripartite. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome. At the last Organic Market Day in June 2024, about 800 guests attended the event, and this year the organizers expect even more visitors. "We are making Organic Market Day even bigger this year with more exhibitions and five knowledge tents. It is open to everyone. This day is an opportunity for the entire agricultural industry to come together for an inspiring day," says Director Kirsten Holst from the Innovation Center for Organic Farming in a press release. Regenerative agriculture can be measured and documented One of the knowledge tents highlights regenerative agriculture, with one of the main speakers being the English Will Andersson from EARA (European Alliance for Regenerative Agriculture). He talks about a research program that can measure regenerative agriculture. "We do not achieve the full potential of regenerative agriculture until it can be measured based on results rather than practices. This means not only asking whether a farmer uses cover crops, reduced tillage, or holistic grazing, but also whether the farm actually delivers better results per hectare compared to similar farms in the area – not only in terms of yield and economy but across the entire package, including soil, biodiversity, water, climate, and use of external inputs," explains Casper Laursen from the Innovation Center for Organic Farming. "This is a serious proposal for how we can compare and score farms and productions independently of production methods, national borders, and climatic conditions." In the same tent, there will also be a debate among different companies about how they can use EARA's method in their work to document suppliers' regenerative results to consumers. The right crop rotations In another knowledge tent, grass and the green tripartite are in focus. From 2027, a new nitrogen regulation will come into effect for all farmers, and crop rotation and clover grass will play a significant role. "The sequence of crops is crucial along with crop choice and fertilization practices. It’s about performing well under the new nitrogen regulation and practicing good farming so that it makes sense for the fjord, drinking water, and the farmer," explains Morten W. Vestenaa from the Innovation Center for Organic Farming. To demonstrate this, he has helped plant a crop circle near the tent. Here, visitors can get inspiration on how to design a crop rotation where each crop benefits as much as possible from the preceding crops, allowing good farming practices to prioritize fertilizer use and reduce nitrogen leaching. "There are also methods to optimize crop rotation so that you can grow legumes and other food crops considering the upcoming emission-based nitrogen regulation. It’s about thinking in crop sequences and fertilization where the effect is greatest," explains Morten W. Vestenaa. Organic Market Day will also feature a series of demonstrations of crops and machinery and themed guided tours. There is also a cozy eating area where you can buy food and drinks, and importantly, there is time and space to meet and network across the industry. Regenerative agriculture can be measured and documented

One of the knowledge tents highlights regenerative agriculture, and one of the main names there is the English Will Andersson from EARA (European Alliance for Regenerative Agriculture). He talks about a research program that can measure regenerative agriculture.

"We do not achieve the full potential of regenerative agriculture until it can be measured based on results rather than practices. This means that we not only ask whether a farmer uses cover crops, reduced tillage, or holistic grazing, but also whether the farm actually delivers better results per hectare compared to similar farms in the area – not only measured by yield and economy, but by the whole package, including soil, biodiversity, water, climate, and use of external inputs," explains Casper Laursen from the Innovation Center for Organic Farming.

In the same tent, there will also be a debate between different companies regarding how they can use EARA's method in their work to document suppliers' regenerative results to consumers.

The right crop rotations

In another knowledge tent, grass and the green tripartite are in focus. For all farmers, a new nitrogen regulation will come into effect from 2027, and here crop rotation and clover grass play a significant role.

"The sequence of crops after each other is crucial along with crop choice and fertilization practices. It is about both performing well under the new nitrogen regulation and practicing good farming so that it makes sense for the fjord, drinking water, and the farmer," explains Morten W. Vestenaa from the Innovation Center for Organic Farming.

To demonstrate this, he has helped plant a crop circle near the tent. Here, you can get inspiration on how to design a crop rotation where each crop benefits as much as possible from the preceding crops, so that with good farming practices, you can prioritize your fertilization and reduce nitrogen leaching.

"There are also methods to optimize crop rotation so that you can grow legumes and other crops for consumption while considering the upcoming emission-based nitrogen regulation. Here, it is again about thinking in crop sequences and fertilization where the effect is best," explains Morten W. Vestenaa.

Eco-Market Day will also feature a series of demonstrations of crops and machinery and themed tours. There is also a cozy eating area where you can buy food and drinks, and not least, there is time and space to meet and network across the industry.
